BIKE TO WORK EVENT ROLLS TO SUCCESS!

Haywood County's first annual "Bike To Work" event went off without a hitch under cloudy skies, which had dropped light rain on the area 30 minutes before the scheduled start at 8:00 a.m. Fourteeen riders made the 3.1 mile ride from West Waynesville to downtown Waynesville where the group terminated at the mini-park to enjoy coffee and muffins provided by Smoky Mountain Cafe. The riders were escorted by mounted Waynesville Police Cyclists and additional cars controlled traffic at each intersection.

Participants used a mixture of arriving by car and by bike to get to the starting point. The ride encompassed a 3.1 mile route of mostly flat riding that started at one major shopping district, transited the Village of Hazelwood, went by two schools, a public library, and at least two churches before coasting down Main St in Waynesville to the terminal point.

BIKE/PEDESTRIAN SAFETY SUMMIT RESULTS RELEASED!

Results from this past winter's state-wide bike/ped safety summits have been released by the N.C. Department of Transportation. The summit meetings brought together advocates represeting cyclists, pedestrians, motorists, law enforcement, health care professionals, and planners/engineers. Each group determined their top concerns and developed 5 solutions for consideration by NC DOT. Seven Major Action Initiatives were identified as a result of the Summit:

  1. Fully Implement Complete Streets
  2. Address Multi-Modal Funding
  3. Retrofit Existing Facilities
  4. Require More from All Road Users
  5. Increase Public Awareness Through Education
  6. Connect Transportation and Land Use
  7. Improve Laws and Strengthen the Enforcement Process

These initiatives will now go forward as part of the NC DOT long range planning for the next decade. “Our citizens have sent a strong message about what they want,” said Deputy Secretary of Transit Jim Westmoreland. “The results of this outreach campaign underscore the importance of NCDOT and local communities collaborating on bicycle and pedestrian planning and identifying funding to meet critical needs; and additionally, will play an important role as we develop a plan for our state’s transportation future.”

BICYCLEHAYWOODNC RIDE LEADERS GET TRAINED

Thirteen of BicycleHaywoodNC ride leaders for 2011 received training and certification in the Red Cross's Basic First Aid training on Tuesday night, April 19th. The group was led by American Red Cross First Aid/CPR certified instructors Jessie Dean and Jesse Oates from Wellspring Adventure Camp. Both are also Wilderness EMT certified leaders. Cecil Yount, Chair of BicycleHaywoodNC, stated, "As a group, our Advocacy Council members felt that we should be in a position to respond appropriately in the unlikely event that someone might be injured on one of our rides. The course helps us to focus on scene safety, initial check of the injured, calling for the next needed level of emergency support, and providing care for the members of the group until a higher level of care arrives." Don and Nancy Lux, BicycleHaywoodNC Advisory Council and Blue Ridge Breakaway leaders, recalled last summer's events where riders, despite warnings, were not prepared for an unexpected rain storm with dropping temperatures on the Blue Ridge Parkway. "We had several riders that quickly lost body heat after having worked up a big sweat climbing to the BRP and then the rain and colder temps hit and just bottomed out their core temperatures. We treated several folks for hypothermia."

Participants in the training practiced skills in assessing scenarios, checking the injured for issues, rolling them properly when unconcious to assess breathing, and providing supportive care until rescue services arrive. The training will certify each of the members for two years in Basic First Aid.

BicycleHaywoodNC provides group rides each Thursday evening for "new and newly returning" riders with a focus on safe riding in a group and within applicable laws. The rides typically begin at Rolls Rite Bicycles 1362 Asheville Rd in Waynesville. The rides are part of the Healthy Haywood 2011 initiative and have been well attended thus far in 2011. For additional information or answers to questions regarding BicycleHaywoodNC activities, send email to gr8SmokiesZeke@gmail.com.

NEW AND NEWLY RETURNING RIDERS GROUP OFF TO GOOD START!

Ben and Jennifer Carolyn & Don

(Jennifer Jacobson, Ben Ray Whitner, Don Lux, Carolyn Pilgrim participating in the first sponsored group ride of 2011)

BicycleHaywoodNC's first sponsored group ride of 2011 is now in the books. Under beautiful blue skies and low 70 degree temps, 12 riders on 11 bikes (hmm, tandem anyone?) struck out from Rolls Rite Bicycle shop in Waynesville, NC to enjoy the first cruise around town of the year. The ride was populated with "new to us" riders, returning veterans such as Carolyn Pilgrim, and a number of BicycleHaywoodNC members. Stan and Shirley Rathbone brought along the first tandem cycle of our group rides.

The cruise speed, "no drop" ride ran out the Richland Creek basin to the Super Wal-Mart on the south end of town and returned to Rolls Rite via the Main Street shopping district before terminating at Rolls Rite. Traffic, for most of the ride, was light getting more dense only in the Super Wal-Mart area. Motorists were very friendly and shared the road without nary a blown horn or expletive yelled in our direction. Featured on the route, were the Waynesville Recreation Department complex on Vance St., the Haywood County Greenway, Historic Frog Level district, two schools, and, as mentioned, the shopping area of the Super Wal-Mart. Skills focused upon were obeying traffic regulations, starting off on hills at traffic lights, crossing dangerous water run-off grates and angled railroad crossings.

The rides will continue each Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. The next two rides will start at Rolls Rite Bicycle Shop on the Old Asheville Highway (North Main St. just past the Board of Education Building). Participants should be on-site at 5:30 p.m. and ready to ride at 5:45 p.m.

NC BIKE/PED SAFETY SUMMIT HELD IN ASHEVILLE!

The N.C. Department of Transportation, Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation, held the third of five planned regional meetings in Asheville on February 23rd at the Buncombe County Commissioners' office on Valley Street. The Summit brought together bicycle and pedestrian advocates, business owners, motorists, urban and rural planners, and law enforcement officers from the surrounding region. The intent of the Summit was to develop local input and solutions to the top five concerns for bicycle and pedestrian safety. This was the first review of bike/ped safety issues by the NC DOT since 2000. The input from across the five Summit meetings will be compiled and presented to the NC DOT governance board for development of the next 10 year plan. Cecil Yount, Chair of BicycleHaywoodNC, represented cycling interests from Haywood County at the meeting.

Bike/Ped Advocates

(Bike/Ped Safety Advocates Listening to Presenters)

Following a welcome and agenda setting session, participants were assigned to one of three focus groups: Cyclists, Pedestrians, or Motorists. Each group was assigned the task of developing the top five safety problem areas faced by their interest group and then tasked with developing five strategies to recommend to the NC DOT to resolve the problem areas in the next DOT plan. During the opening session, attendees were informed that emerging issues in bike/ped cycling include distracted drivers, an expectation of major growth in cycling and pedestrian activities as alternative forms of transportation without having sufficient infrastructure to support them, and an inadequate level of funding for bike/ped safety issues.

The top five safety issues, in no particular order, for the cyclists group were:

  • Equal Enforcement of the laws for both cyclists and motorists
  • Inadequate support facilities for cyclists and pedestrians
  • Poor Work Zone Management by utility companies and developers
  • Poor interagency coordination around all aspects of planning, development, implementation, and review
  • A need for a significant cultural change where cycling and pedestrian traffic are valued as alternative means of transportation.

Following the individual focus group meetings, the larger group was rejoined and each group presented their top five problem areas along with solutions to the full group. There were considerable overlap and concerns within each group, which became apparent throughout the presentations. The aggregated data will now be combined with that data from the other four Summit sites across the State. An on-line poll will then be taken of the Summit participants to narrow down the final top five safety problem areas and solutions, which will then be presented to the N.C. Department of Transportation for inclusion in their next 10 year plan.

Participants expect to get the on-line poll distributed to them by mid-March with the aggregated state-wide results to follow by mid-year. Current guides for Bicycle and Pedestrian Laws and Streetwise Cycling may be found at the NC DOT website.

BICYCLEHAYWOODNC GROUP MEETS WITH HAYWOOD COUNTY RECREATION COUNCIL ADVISORY GROUP

Repesentatives from BicycleHaywoodNC met on Tuesday, January 4th with the Haywood County Recreation Department Advisory Council to inform them of the recent success in gaining bike planning grant monies and to solicit a letter of endorsement from them to take to the Haywood County Commissioners on January 24th, 2011. Representing BicycleHaywoodNC were George Ivey, Jennifer Jacobson, Joyce Martin, and Cecil Yount. Also, in attendance was Tony Sexton, who has been instrumental in procuring the grant monies and who will assist from the County perspective in administering the grant.

Sexton apprised the County Advisory Group of the generalities and intents of the grant, Yount covered some of the history of BicycleHaywoodNC and the role in advocacy and education taken by the group, and Ivey addressed specifics of the upcoming planning grant. Following a question and answer period, the Council voted to endorse the bike planning grant process and agreed to write a letter of endorsement. Issues covered in the Q&A included "what's next", concerns about safety on local roads, and questions about what role the County government would take in the process.

Up next in the process is a meeting with the Haywood County Board of Commissioners during a public comment period. Assuming no negative reaction to the process at that point, the next step will be development of a Request for Proposal to select a knowledgable bike planning consultant.

With the shortest day of the year upon us, we can now look forward to days lengthening once again and heading in the direction of more post-work day light allowing for more folks to get outside and be active. For most folks, we're still 60 to 90 days away from lots of outdoor activities after work but for others, every day is an opportunity or choice to bike to work. Following is an interesting look at the cycling infrastructure of Pittsburgh, PA and how cycling adds to the quality of life in that city. MILESTONE IN BIKE PLANNING REACHED!

The French Broad Metropolitan Planning Organization made a grant to Haywood County Government today bringing the plan for development of a bike plan one step closer to reality for Haywood County, NC. Through efforts initiated by BicycleHaywoodNC, monies will shortly be available for the purchase of consultant services to help develop the county wide bicycle plan. The plan is unique in that it is believed to be the first in North Carolina to be developed on a county wide basis rather than an individual municipality basis.

Today's announcement is the latest step in a process that has included grants from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, MAST General Store, and individual donors. Next up, is development of the RFP and approval by the Haywood County Commissioners, who have agreed to be the administrative authority for the funds.

In a study reported at the American College of Sports Medicine, researchers indicate that their results indicate regular exercise helps reduce anger.

“The major novel finding from this study is that exercise protected against angry mood induction, almost like taking aspirin to prevent a heart attack,” said lead investigator Nathaniel Thom, Ph.D., a stress physiologist. “In other words, exercise really is like medicine..." Excercise has long been known to be a factor in improving mood and overcoming depression due to the effects of increased brain chemicals that result from exercising regularly.

BICYCLEHAYWOODNC SPONSORED RIDES TO CONTINUE...

BICYCLEHAYWOODNC, the local bicycle advisory council, has announced the extension of their sponsored rides on Thursday evenings effective August 12th. The first set of 6 rides was successfully completed on August 5th. Council members voted to extend the Thursday evening rides based upon the feedback received from participants and the success of the first 6 weeks. Rides originated at Rolls Rite Bicycles on North Main St. and included parts of the Haywood County Greenway, Waynesville Recreation Department facilities, retail shopping district, and the Richland Creek basin. The route of each ride was approximately 10 miles and occurred over mostly flat terrain.

Council member Marcia Tate, of the Haywood County Health Department, remarked, “We’ve had very good participation and a nice mixture of less experienced and more experienced riders each week. Each week, we’ve had at least one rider from outside our area that was here vacationing and looking for a ride. We had not anticipated that type of participation but were very happy to include visiting folks in our efforts. It gave us a nice chance to showcase the local area and also learn from them about their experiences here.”

“To date, each ride has made its way to Wal-Mart on the southern end of town. We intentionally wanted to demonstrate that it is possible to use a bicycle to run many errands around town. If we could encourage citizens to either cycle or walk on even 50% of their normal 2 mile shopping trips, we would ease traffic congestion in town, significantly reduce air pollution, and greatly enhance our community members’ health reducing our overall health care costs” reported Cecil Yount, another BICYCLEHAYWOODNC council member. Yount went on to state, “In our next series of rides, we will be extending our routes somewhat and gradually increasing our climbing efforts. There is so much beautiful country to see in Haywood, we really want to get out and showcase it. Experiencing Haywood from 2 wheels is entirely different than driving through it with your windows rolled up and the air conditioning running while talking on your cell phone!”

Jennifer Jacobson, a ride leader and council member, spoke of the “courtesy received from the motoring public. Out of 6 weeks, we didn’t have a single individual motorist yell at us or try to hit us. The patience shown by drivers was outstanding and we felt really highlighted the hospitality of our local citizens. We look forward to having at least one of our rides start in Canton during this next 6 weeks. We want to get folks to experience the fine riding available around the Pigeon Valley.”

Rides will continue to start on Thursday nights at Rolls Rite Bicycles on North Main St. in Waynesville at 5:30 p.m. A short riders meeting covering safety issues will be followed by a 10 to 15 mile ride in areas around Haywood County. For more information, visit www.bicyclehaywoodnc.org or call Rolls Rite at 828-276-6080 after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. AARP PROMOTES CYCLING!

The  Association of American Retired Persons (AARP) featured an article on cycling in the July – August 2010 Bulletin. The article titled Biketopia covers the increase in American cyclists and how one town, Brunswick, Maine, has increased their cycling infrastructure resulting in an increase in ridership. There are also 5 helpful hints on how any community can become bike-friendly. Author Rob Gurwitt connects with numerous over 50 years old cyclists involved in the cycling culture around Brunswick. He reports that years ago Brunswick “made  a commitment that every middle-school-aged child should be able to bike safely anywhere in their town.” Episcopal priest John Balicki, 60, former Maine Department of Transportation bike/ped coordinator says “we're not there yet. That’s our next frontier.” It is refreshing and affirming to see that the elders of our generation are taking cycling to heart. It also shows the breadth of the cycling movement in America, i.e., you don’t have to be spandex clad roadie or a MTB flash to enjoy cycling! (Not that there’s anything wrong with it….)

For the on-line version and to see a well done video on the Brunswick bike path, visit Biketopia.

FEDERAL SUPPORT FOR NON-MOTORIZED TRANSPORTATION ANNOUNCED!

Secretary of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announces "a sea change" in transportation planning. In a follow-up to his comments at the 10th Annual Bike Summit, LaHood provided more detail on federal plans to bring non-motorized transportation needs to an equal level with motorized transportation in the federal planning processes. LaHood indicated that federal emphasis would be to give cyclists and pedestrians more equal footing when meeting community transportation needs. LaHood's remarks were roundly applauded in the cycling world and characterized as the most supportive stance taken by the federal government yet in providing alternative forms of non-motorized transportation support.

TRAFFIC CONGESTION AND RECLAIMING THE STREETS IN NYC

Thanks to EcoVelo for the link to StreetFilms latest offerring on how New York City is addressing the car-centric designs of the past. Hopefully, this short video can stimulate some creative thoughts on how to avoid some of the problems that we've made in our past related to being so myopic in our views of what our streets and towns should be. All across this country, town planners and citizens are rethinking how we want to live amid congestion. Unfortunately, it seems that a lot of momentum in these areas has been dropped as gas prices dropped. Do we indeed learn from our past behaviors? Enjoy the video...

ROAD RAGE CASE IN L.A. COMES TO CONCLUSION...

The trial of Dr. Christopher Thompson, accused of having assaulted local cyclists in the summer of 2008 in Mandeville Canyon, Los Angeles closed yesterday, Monday, November 2nd, when the jury found him guilty on 6 counts of felony assault and 1 count of misdemeanor count of reckless driving stemming from a separate incident. In all, 3 separate incidents of charges against the doctor were presented to the jury. State's Attorney Mary Stone, in her closing argument, laid out a scenario wherein the doctor had an increasingly violent pattern of interaction with area cyclists. The Defense attorney presented a case that varied from the situation being a tragic accident to it being the cyclist's fault because "bicycles are inherently unstable machines". His contention that the Pro level cyclist just happened to fall over on his bike and injure himself apparently did not play well with the jury. The Presiding Judge denied the defense motion for bail and ordered Dr. Thompson taken into custody immediately. He will be held until his sentencing date of December 8th. LOCAL PISGAH MOUNTAIN BIKE STAGE RACE COVERED NATIONALLY!

Bicycling magazine's Mountain Bike section covered the recent inaugural Pisgah Stage Race held in Transylvania County. The race brought international and national top Pro's and Amateurs to Western North Carolina to enjoy some serious WNC mountain bike riding. The stage race format for a mountain bike race is unusual as few mountain bike races extend over several days. The local weather was less than accommodating to onlookers but provided "interesting" trail conditions for the riders. To follow Bicycling magazine's coverage, CLICK HERE!

LOS ANGELES ROAD RAGE CASE GOES TO TRIAL...

Road Bike Magazine is reporting that the case against Dr. Christopher Thompson will go to trial this week in Los Angeles County. The doctor is charged with a number of offenses resulting from his having allegedly encountered two cyclists on a road popular with local cyclists. The doctor is reported to have have had a confrontation with the cyclists while pulling alongside of them and is then accused of pulling in front of them and slamming on his brakes resulting in both cyclists crashing into his vehicle. One of the cyclists went through the doctor's rear window and sustained major injuries including almost severing his nose. For further details of this story, CLICK HERE!. In a potentially damaging move to any defense raised by Dr. Thompson, the Los Angeles District Attorney has reinstated a charge of misdemeanor reckless driving causing injury related to a prior charge against the doctor when he allegedly behaved similarly injuring two other cyclists.

BICYCLEHAYWOODNC Monthly Meeting Held...

The September 2009 meeting of BICYCLEHAYWOODNC was held on Tuesday, September 15th, at the Gateway Club in Waynesville. Members attending include Joey Massie, George Ivey, Bryan Phillips, John Mudge, Scot Worley, Stan Rathbone, Ron Leatherwood, and Cecil Yount. Guest Ken Howle of the Haywood Chamber of Commerce was also present.

Yount opened the meeting by sharing information received from NC Bicycle Committee representative Claudia Nix about the upcoming planning grants approval rounds that will close December 2009. A print out with information regarding the grant process and model bike/ped plans was provided to each participant. Interested readers may find the information by CLICKING HERE! Rathbone then discussed with Council members his recent efforts at determining the bike plans of Asheville and Hendersonville. He reported that Hendersonville does not have a bike plan whereas Asheville has a full plan. He spoke of the need for municipalities to work directly with DOT around bike plans. While it would appear in Haywood's case, a full county entity might be more logical that does not appear to be open at the moment. We discussed the need to have all municipalities in Haywood on board and working together even if only municipalities can apply individually. Rathbone also reported that, in hindsight, Asheville wishes they had involved a wider area of focus in their planning grants.

Mudge brought up the issue of not having any printed materials available to hand to tourists, who are interested in riding Haywood roads. We reviewed a couple of options regarding posting more and more rides on the Council web site and having information available at retail and public outlets notifying interested riders of on-line resources. Phillips also indicated he would look into creation of cue sheets for local rides. Yount stated that this conversation inevitably leads to a need to raise funds. Howle suggested approaching the local Tourism Development Authority to see a grant to publish materials advertising local routes. Yount also reported that he regularly maps his rides on MayMyRide and lists them for public consumption. Others are encouraged to do the same. Leatherwood reported that he has accepted appointment to a committee in Waynesville, which will be reviewing the Neighborhood Districts. This will include setbacks, on-street parking, and other areas that impact ease of cycling. Leatherwood stated he would keep the need for cycling related issues in the committee's vision.

Leatherwood also reported that the local Haywood Regional Medical Center Fitness Center has recently completed a remodeling of the exterior of the facility. Thanks to Leatherwood's input, bicycle parking racks now sit front and center of the remodeled entrance.

Howle updated the Council on plans of the Haywood Chamber of Commerce's cycling event to be held tentatively on August 21, 2010. This is the date on which the Maggie Moonlight Race was held for years. In addition to drawing local cyclists, the Chamber hopes to draw from nearby metropolitan areas such as Greensboro, Charlotte, Greenville, SC, and Knoxville, TN. The event hopes to have a Century, Metric Century, 20 mile ride, and possibly shorter family oriented rides around Lake Junaluska. Lake Junaluska will serve as the beginning and terminating points for the event. Howle spoke of the need for volunteers to staff the event. Phillips offered assistance with route planning. Yount assured Howle that the Council is very interested in the project and would like to be of assistance as plans come together.

The next meeting of BICYCLEHAYWOODNC will be held on Tuesday, October 20th at noon at the Gateway Club in Waynesville. Comments or questions regarding this summary should be sent HERE!

BicycleHaywoodNC held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 18th at the Gateway Club in Waynesville, NC. Topics addressed at the meeting included:

  • Review of the recently launched Council web site with members in attendance completing a short biographical sketch for publication on the Council Members page.
  • Discussion to better understand the maintenance of the Greenway as it currently exists and barriers to further implementation of the plan. Members noted that large pieces of gravel on one small section of the Greenway near the Industrial Park is very hard for road bikes to negotiate as is a couple of places of heavy sand. Overall, members praised the riding experience of those sections of the Greenway that have been completed.
  • Discussion of the Rough Fork off-road trail and of impending work needing to be done to maintain and improve the trails. M. Tate provided color brochures about the trail, which will be disseminated when further work is completed on the trail itself.
  • S. Rathbone introduced topic of Rails-To-Trails should Southern Railway ever decide to abandon the rails to Sylva over Balsam Mountain. F. Baker and R. Leatherwood report that there is no current plans to their knowledge for abandonment of the trails. Everyone agreed that an enterprise similar to the Virginia Creeper trail could be a boon to area commerce with Rathbone noting the numerous vehicles pulling trailers of bikes up to the off-load site to start the Creeper. The trail has been very good to Damascus, VA and does represent one potential expansion of cycling and commerce.
  • C. Yount advised members that he had sent email to all individuals who have previously indicated an interest in being part of the Council requesting that they correspond in some fashion with him to express their ongoing interest. He reported of two individuals, who want to remain active member but cannot attend the luncheon meetings. These folks will be maintained on the email distribution list and their ongoing input will be welcome. Yount reported that some others have not been heard from and they have been removed from the email list. To be reinstated, they need to simply contact Yount.
  • A lengthy discussion was held about the need for a bike plan for Waynesville and ultimately Haywood County. R. Leatherwood agreed to contact some individuals with NC DOT to seek their assistance and S. Rathbone agreed to seek out examples of Bike Plans for Hendersonville and Asheville. Yount remarked that C. Nix would be an excellent contact for same.
  • Yount reported to the Council that he is scheduled to meet with the Waynesville Downtown Merchants Association at their October meeting and hopes to be put on an upcoming Board of Alderman meeting for the town of Waynesville. The purpose of the visits will be to increase public awareness of the Council and its activities and to encourage cooperative efforts between the Council and local merchants to increase the infrastructure to support increased cycling activities and to increase commerce activities by cyclists.
  • Yount also informed the Council that the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce is planning a bike event in May 2010. While many details are still being developed, the start and end location for the event is likely to be Lake Junaluska Assembly. Yount has advised the Chamber that the Council would be very interested in being an active partner in the process of bringing about such an event.

The next meeting of the Council will be on September 15th at noon at the Gateway Club in Waynesville.

States Increasingly Giving Cyclists 3' of Space...

A number of states have already passed or are considering laws that require motorists to give a cyclist at least 3' of space when passing. The intent of the law is to decrease the incidence of cyclists being "clipped" by mirrors or worse when motorists attempt to pass and squeeze the cyclist into sometimes very small space. Check out this article courtesy of BicycleHaywoodNC Council member Joey Massie... Cyclists getting Space!

ROAD RAGE IN THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTH CAROLINA!

In what must be one of the more bizarre “road rage” incidents of this summer, an off-duty Asheville, NC fireman is reported to have pulled over a couple riding their bicycles on Tunnel Road in Asheville. The fireman allegedly was upset over the couple having their child in a bike approved car seat and riding him in traffic. The confrontation apparently escalated to the point that the fireman pulled out a gun and shot at the cyclist. According to the Asheville Citizen’s report (07/28/2009), the bullet passed through the helmet of the cyclist, fortunately missing his head. The fireman is now being held under a $500,000.00 bond on Attempted First Degree Murder. To read the story on-line, CLICK HERE!

BicycleHaywoodNC held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 21st at the Gateway Club in Waynesville, NC. Topics addressed at the meeting included:

  • A review of the work of the N.C. Bicycle Committee by NC Bike Committee representative Claudia Nix.
  • A proposed "backbone" cycling route through Waynesville, NC to be presented to town leaders for official support. (See map below. You may click on the "view full screen" option in order to zoom the map to street level.)
  • Council participation in upcoming "Block Parties" in Waynesville by providing either bike corrals or information booths.
  • Initial discussion with guests from the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce and Haywood Tourism Development Authority on sponsoring a cycling related event in the spring of 2010.

Further review of these topics can be found on the Thursday, July 23rd, post at Zekes Great Smokies 2-Wheeled Adventures!

The comprehensive transportation plan for Buncombe and Haywood Counties developed by the French Broad River Municipal Planning Organization was released to the public in a 2008 document. This important planning organization helps set priorities for how funds are disbursed through the N.C. Department of Transportation. The FBRMPO recently voted to support a number of cycling related projects. Unfortunately, all of those projects were located in Buncombe and Henderson Counties.
